First Year Connect Newsletter Special Edition: Transfer Student Week

Hey Spartans!

Welcome to a very special edition of the Your First Year Connect Newsletter spotlighting Transfer Student Week! This edition is all about celebrating you, our transfer students at UNCG, and showing our appreciation!

Did you know that next week, October 17-21, is designated as National Transfer Week! Transfer Students make up more than 1/3 of UNCG’s undergraduate population and are such an integral part of UNCG. Read on to see how we’re celebrating you, our Spartan transfers, and hear from others about their transfer experience at UNCG.

By the Numbers

  • 1,500+ new transfer students were admitted to UNCG this fall.
  • Almost half of all graduates each spring began at UNCG as transfer students.
  • The average age of our Spartan transfers is 25.
  • 63% of transfers come from NC 2-year colleges and 20% come from NC 4-year institutions.
  • 54% self-identify as a first-generation college student.
  • On-campus transfer students can get involved easily, including leadership opportunities as part of the Tau Sigma National Honor Society (especially for transfer students).

Student Highlights

Learn more about the experiences of your transfer student peers by reading the stories of Sarah and Meaghan!

Sarah Webber

“Transferring to UNCG has been one of the best decisions in my life. Before coming here, I was lost and unsure where I fit into the grand scheme of things. Now I love my major, have made life-long friends, and feel incredibly supported by the staff and faculty here! There is no place else I would rather be.”

Meaghan Dohnert

“I started at UNCG online, while they really accommodate their online students, my goal was to come to campus and make those meaningful connections in person. So far, I have met a multitude of people with so much potential, I have grown my network exponentially, and throughout it all I have found time to develop and define my personal and professional brand.”

Get Involved

Are you looking to get involved with other transfer student peers? Check out Transfer2Transfer and Tau Sigma, two programs on campus specifically for transfer students.

Transfer2Transfer

In this program, first-year transfer students are paired with a transfer student mentor who is at least in their second year at UNCG. The program aims to build community and a sense of belonging among the transfer population, as well as provide a source of connection, support, and point of contact for students. Through the duration of the program, over 400 mentees and mentors have been matched together.

Tau Sigma exists to:

  • address the current lack of recognition of outstanding academic achievement of transfer students.
  • provide motivation for the academic excellence of all incoming transfer students.
  • enhance the reputation of all transfer students.
  • provide a common bond among transfer students.
  • promote the involvement of transfer students in the college or university to which they transfer.
  • form a group of students who can help the college or university address and meet the needs of incoming transfer students.
