Congratulations! You are over halfway through your first year at UNCG!

Recently, we have received numerous requests about how to be more successful in your classes this semester. Please see below for numerous ways that you can finish the semester strong:
  • Read your syllabi! They are the roadmap for your class and share all of the specifics about what assignments and tasks you have for each class.
  • Turn in assignments by the listed due dates!
  • Participation in class is essential! Participation can look different in every class, make sure you are checking your syllabi for what your professor is expecting of you.
  • Seek out resources:
  • At the end of this newsletter we have shared several academic support resources. They include the Academic Achievement Center, Writing Center, and the Speaking Center.
  • Reach out to your PALs or other student leaders! They are students just like you and can be a great resource.

Writing Center

The University Writing Center offers UNCG students, staff, and faculty the opportunity for individual consultation at any stage of any writing project!

Depending on where you are in your writing process when you visit the Writing Center and what your major concerns are, a consultation might involve deciding how to approach a particular assignment, identifying a thesis and sculpting a rough outline, reading a rough draft to check for general coherence and clarity, incorporating new material into a revision, addressing problems of grammar and sentence structure, learning how to cite sources properly – or any of a myriad of other questions about writing.

Here are a few reminders as you get ready for a visit, online or face to face, to the University Writing Center:

  • Bring a written copy of the assignment
  • Know your professor’s expectations for writing in your discipline
  • Know the name of your professor’s preferred citation style, if applicable
  • Bring any previous feedback that you have received
  • Your consultant will ask you what you want to work on: have an answer! Think about what to address in your Writing Center session, as this will focus your writing efforts and get the process of self-reflection started, which is an instrumental part of the writing process.
Speaking Center

The University Speaking Center provides consultation support and instructional services to help speakers further develop their own oral communication confidence and competence. They provide peer-to-peer feedback, guidance, and other support in the areas of public speaking preparation and delivery, interpersonal communication, and group or team communication.

This semester the Speaking Center is offering online hours.
Monday – Thursday: 10am-10pm
Friday: 9am-3pm
Saturday: Closed
Sunday: 4pm-8pm

New this semester: Students can text the speaking center with ANY student question they have during hours of operation. Students have questions. We are students. We can help students find answers! 252.538.3407
