Kim Sousa-Peoples, Ph.D.Director
Kim has worked in higher education for 25 years. She earned her Ph.D. from UNCG’s School of Education Curriculum and Instruction department, studying higher education administration. She also holds a Master’s degree in higher education and a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, both from The University of South Carolina. Prior to serving as the Director of New Student Transitions & First Year Experience, she was the Assistant Director of Orientation for Parent and Family Programs at UNCG and the Assistant Dean of Students at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. Kim is also a certified fitness instructor and teaches several group exercise classes weekly. Kim has a daughter in college and a daughter in high school, both keeping her busy and entertained!
Austin McKimAssistant Director
Austin earned his M.Ed in Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education here at UNCG and and his B.A in Communication Studies from Christopher Newport University. Prior to serving as the Assistant Director, he worked as a Coordinator and Graduate Assistant in the NST & FYE office as well worked for a year at CNU as a University Fellow. In his current role, Austin oversees the Spartan Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program, SOAR sponsorship program, and various first year student and family initiatives. In his free time, Austin enjoys spending time with his girlfriend and dog, playing sports & Fantasy Football, and watching his favorite TV shows.
Emily WiersmaAssistant Director
Emily earned her M.Ed. in College Student Personnel from Ohio University, and B.S. in Psychology with a focus in Education and English from the University of Mount Union. Prior to joining the team, Emily served the Dean of Students Office, while developing transition and support programs for foster youth students in higher education. Additionally, Emily has served as an Admission Representative, and Instructor and Academic Advisor for first-year students. In her role as Assistant Director, Emily oversees the Foundations for Learning program, Keker First Year Common Read program, and other first year experience initiatives. Emily also enjoys visiting family at the beach and spending time with her partner and their two cats, who keep them thoroughly entertained!
Shakinah is a Coordinator in the Office of New Student Transitions and First Year Experience. She earned her Master’s degree in Higher Education from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and her Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Elon University. Shakinah primarily works with parents and families to support them during the recruitment, orientation, and transition phases. Prior to working at UNCG, she worked as an Admissions Counselor at Pfeiffer University and served as a graduate assistant in the Housing and Residence Life and Career Services Offices at UNCG. In her free time, Shakinah enjoys spending time with her family and volunteering through her sorority in the Greensboro and Burlington areas.
James is a coordinator in New Student Transitions and First Year Experience. Prior to joining the team at UNCG, he worked at the University of Colorado Boulder with New Student and Family Programs. He earned his MS in College Student Personnel from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and his BBA in Marketing with an emphasis in Sales and Sales Management. In James’ current role, he oversees student leader training and development for the Spartan Orientation Staff and the Foundations for Learning Peer Academic Leaders. He also serves as the primary advisor for Alpha Lambda Delta First Year Honor Society. In his free time, James enjoys spending time with friends, cheering on the Vols, and going on unexpected adventures.
Jesse HallTechnology Manager
Jesse is the technology manager for the office of New Student Transitions & First Year Experience. He is currently attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. In his free time he enjoys watching television and movies, and building costumes and props.
Jewel GibsonBussiness Manager
Jewel is the business manager for the Office of New Student Transitions & First Year Experience. She recently graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and a Minor in Media Studies. She is skilled in editing videos, is certified in social media marketing, and has aspirations to brand music artists in the future. In her spare time, Jewel likes to listen to music, hang out with friends, and watch movies.
Aaron HowellGraduate Assistant
Aaron is currently the Graduate Assistant for First Year Experience and Your First Year for the office of New Student Transitions and First Year Experience. He is a student in the Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education Program. He received is B.A in Psychology from Winthrop University. In his free time, he likes to play tennis, hike, and watch Netflix.
Ronnie ArmstrongGraduate Assistant
Ronnie is the Graduate Assistant for Research and Special Projects for the office of New Student Transitions and First Year Experience. He is currently a graduate student in the Counseling Education Department. He received his B.S. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In his free time, he likes to sing, watch movies, hang out with friends and volunteer.
Jeannine HarrellGraduate Assistant
Jeannine is the Graduate Assistant for SOAR in the office of New Student Transitions and First Year Experience. She is currently a graduate student in the Counseling Education Department, pursuing her MS Eds. She received her B.A. in Psychology and Elementary Education from Guilford College. In her free time, she likes to dance, read, cook, watch movies, and spend time with family and friends.
Lauren GustafsonGraduate Assistant
Lauren is the Graduate Assistant for Foundations for Learning program and Keker First Year Common Read for the office of New Student Transitions and First Year Experience. She is currently a masters student in the Counseling Education Department. Lauren spent three years as a high school teacher in Guilford County before beginning graduate school at UNCG. Prior to moving to North Carolina, she received her B.A in English from Denison University. In her free time, she likes to make pottery, read, travel home to Los Angeles and play sand volleyball.
Ciara GazawayFirst Year Assistant
Ciara Gazaway is a Senior majoring in Human Development and Family Studies with a minor in Sociology. Prior to being a First Year Assistant, she was a member of the Spartan Orientation Staff for two years. In her free time, Ciara loves to listen to music, craft, dabble in cosmetology, and watch movies!
McKayla BohannonFirst Year Assistant
McKayla is a junior from Mocksville, North Carolina double majoring in Psychology and African American Studies and a minor in Sociology. Before becoming a First Year Assistant she was a part of the Spartan Orientation Staff for one year. In her free time she likes to spend time with family, read, and watch Netflix.
