Kim Sousa-Peoples, Ph.D.Director
Kim has worked in higher education for 25 years. She earned her Ph.D. from UNCG’s School of Education Curriculum and Instruction department, studying higher education administration. She also holds a Master’s degree in higher education and a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, both from The University of South Carolina. Prior to serving as the Director of New Student Transitions & First Year Experience, she was the Assistant Director of Orientation for Parent and Family Programs at UNCG and the Assistant Dean of Students at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. Kim is also a certified fitness instructor and teaches several group exercise classes weekly. Kim has a daughter in college and a daughter in high school, both keeping her busy and entertained!
Shakima M. ClencySenior Associate Director
Shakima has worked in Higher Education for over 10 years in a variety of capacities. Prior to working in the New Student Transitions & First Year Experience office, Shakima worked as the Associate Director for Academic Transitions, Learning Communities and as an Assistant Director for Residence Life at UNCG and the College of the Holy Cross. Given her knowledge of student transitional issues and student development theory, Shakima appreciates opportunities to work directly with students and their families to assist in their transition to the UNCG community. Shakima’s professional interests include, academic initiatives, the first-year experience, culturally responsive teaching and intercollegiate sports. Shakima received her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Alfred University and her Master’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration from Canisius College. Currently, Shakima is pursuing her doctorate degree in Educational Studies with a concentration in Cultural Studies at UNCG. In her spare time, Shakima enjoys spending time with her family, attending college sporting events, reading magazines, and shopping with her daughter Raven.
Austin McKimAssistant Director
Austin earned his M.Ed in Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education here at UNCG and and his B.A in Communication Studies from Christopher Newport University. Prior to serving as the Assistant Director, he worked as a Coordinator and Graduate Assistant in the NST & FYE office as well worked for a year at CNU as a University Fellow. In his current role, Austin oversees the Spartan Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program, SOAR sponsorship program, and various first year student and family initiatives. In his free time, Austin enjoys spending time with his girlfriend and dog, playing sports & Fantasy Football, and watching his favorite TV shows.
Shakinah is a Coordinator in the Office of New Student Transitions and First Year Experience. She earned her Master’s degree in Higher Education from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and her Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Elon University. Shakinah primarily works with parents and families to support them during the recruitment, orientation, and transition phases. Prior to working at UNCG, she worked as an Admissions Counselor at Pfeiffer University and served as a graduate assistant in the Housing and Residence Life and Career Services Offices at UNCG. In her free time, Shakinah enjoys spending time with her family and volunteering through her sorority in the Greensboro and Burlington areas.
James is a coordinator in New Student Transitions and First Year Experience. Prior to joining the team at UNCG, he worked at the University of Colorado Boulder with New Student and Family Programs. He earned his MS in College Student Personnel from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and his BBA in Marketing with an emphasis in Sales and Sales Management. In James’ current role, he oversees student leader training and development for the Spartan Orientation Staff and the Foundations for Learning Peer Academic Leaders. He also serves as the primary advisor for Alpha Lambda Delta First Year Honor Society. In his free time, James enjoys spending time with friends, cheering on the Vols, and going on unexpected adventures.
Jesse HallTechnical Service Technician
Jesse is the technical services technician for the office of New Student Transitions & First Year Experience. He is currently attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. In his free time he enjoys watching television and movies, and building costumes and props.
Aaron HowellGraduate Assistant
Aaron is currently the Graduate Assistant for First Year Experience and Your First Year for the office of New Student Transitions and First Year Experience. He is a student in the Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education Program. He received is B.A in Psychology from Winthrop University. In his free time, he likes to play tennis, hike, and watch Netflix.
Dalton MeyerFirst Year Assistant
Dalton Meyer is a First Year Assistant in the office and is currently a Senior at UNCG with a major in Political Science with a concentration in Pre Law, and a Minor in Business. In his spare time, Dalton likes to play with his dog, dabble in photography, and watch his favorite TV shows.
Colby KirkmanFirst Year Assistant
Colby is a rising Senior from Sanford, North Carolina majoring in Kinesiology. Prior to serving as a First Year Assistant in the office was an orientation leader for two years. In his free time, Colby enjoys playing golf, lifting weights, watching college basketball, and volunteering in the community with his fraternity.
